NPI-National Provider Identifier Update....188 Days left and counting to get your NPI and communicate your NPI.
Once you have obtained your NPI the next critical step is to communicate your NPI with all the payers associated with your practice. The first and most important payer to communicate your NPI to is the Federal Medicare Program. Even though you have applied and received your NPI that does NOT automatically communicate your NPI to the Federal Medicare program. This must be done by the provider or the practice administration that is in charge of your practice operations, e.g. practice management firm, consultant, hospital business office, facility administration, etc. When it comes to communicating your NPI with Medicare the following options exist:
For new Medicare providers, your NPI MUST appear on your Medicare 855 enrollment documents/application
For existing Medicare providers, you must provide your NPI when making ANY changes, e.g. name, address, phone number, etc., to your Medicare provider / enrollment information.
Existing Medicare providers can also communicate their NPI to Medicare simply by using it appropriately -now- on all Medicare claims data submitted ALONG with your current Medicare Legacy / Provider ID.
