NPI - National Provider Identifier Update --- According to WEDI - Workgroup for Electronic Data Interchange- The total number of NPIs that have been issued is 1.1 million or less than 50% of the estimated 2.3 million expected to be issued. Even more disturbing is the fact that at this point in the NPI implementation time line, less than 2 % of those healthcare providers with NPIs have communicated their NPI to the third party carrier/payer community. As a reminder, all healthcare providers must have their NPI by May 2007 when full implementation of the NPI project is due, just 8 months away. BCS has applied for, and received hundreds of NPIs, and takes this responsibility for our clientele's practices very seriously.
